Xenos Rampant - The Review

There's been some curiosity about Osprey's new Xenos Rampant sci-fi rules. They're the latest in the Lion Rampant and Dragon Rampant family and the pedigree is obvious. I've played DR many times and it's a fine beer and pretzels light tabletop game that doesn't pretend to be anything more grand than just that. The frustrations are obvious to anyone who has played them though, most notably the notorious "Failed Action" roll.

For those of you not familiar with the rules, on your turn you select a unit, choose an action (Move, Fight (assault move + close combat) or Shoot (ranged attack)). Depending on the type of unit, those actions have different adds of success.

Here's an example - Light Riders. Light cavalry, better at shooting than swordsmanship. You want these guys to move. Roll 2d6 and try to equal or exceed the Move rating of 5+. If you fail that roll, your turn immediately ends and it's on to your opponent. Anyone who has played has a story about repeatedly failing action rolls and getting trampled to death due to their inability to act. It happens. It's also, I feel, the single biggest failing in the rules. It sucks BAD to get on a bad run of the dice.

Xenos Rampant addresses this with giving most troops types at least one Action that incurs no risk of failure - a FREE action.

Here's the example, Heavy Infantry. They're very good for defending a thing and staying put because if you choose to activate them and order them to shoot, you can dispense with the activation roll and simply proceed to shooting their guns!

There are special unit upgrades that give troops even more reliability, such as Mechanoid, which is something you'd apply to robotic troops. Amongst other things it does this:

So as long as this unit is in decent shape, it's very reliable. Once the damage starts to accumulate, things will go sour but that's just part of the game.

In summary, the failed activation problem has been addressed. Maybe not cured, but certainly not ignored by the designers.

Another aspect of the Rampant series that some players may not care for is "lots of dice." I for one love "buckets 'o dice" but that's not for everyone. Whereas previous games required 12 dice to be rolled at a time, Xenos Rampant maxes out at 10. An improvement if that's important to you. Dice guy still gets to roll dice.

The last gigantic improvement that popped out at me was Morale / Courage. With previous games in the series, the total number of casualties the unit had taken throughout the game served as a negative modifier to a unit's Courage tests, meaning a heavily-depleted unit needed an Act of Congress/God to hold its nerve or quit running away.

Xenos Rampant changes this to where only casualties sustained during the Courage test inducing event are counted as negative modifiers; the total number of modifier sustained during the game is more or less irrelevant.

This changes significantly after the unit is at or below half strength. At that point the unit only rolls ONE D6 instead of two. Most units have a courage of 4+, so the test is still passable, but certainly less so. A beat up unit that's running away or cowering can certainly get its act together and turn around at 50/50 odds. That's not bad at all and a welcome change.

Vehicles are an integrated part of the Xenos Rampant rules. They do not use different rules and armor/damage/etc is handled exactly as it is for any other unit. If you play by the book rules, you won't be able to have more than one in a 24-point army. They're easy to use and feel well-balanced. Tough tanks are going to be hard to kill, but that's to be expected. Vehicles that move may opt to fire as well, albeit with a to-hit penalty. A simple enough solution for sure. The other caveat is that the vehicle cannot use a "Free" Move action and shoot its guns; the player must roll an activation test to get the double-action.

If you're looking for generic set of sci-fi rules that works well with 28mm and 15mm miniatures, Xenos Rampant is a fine set. If you've played Lion or Dragon and despise the activation roll mechanism, you want to skip this. I am very happy with the $25 I spent for the PDF and am looking forward to more games with it.

End of Year Post

2021 was a stinker, right? I think the icing on the cake was finding out that Rapier game con in Jacksonville has run its course and is no more.

FUUUUUUUUUUU.......!

The Jacksonville Garrison is getting some other replacement event together and they're a pretty together band of gamers so there's hope. I really hope they select a good weekend. First weekend of February was very good for me.

2021 was all bad though. Southern Front in Raleigh was great and I look forward to next year. I wonder if their groups.io account will be abuzz with violent arguments about masking again or if they'll get over themselves?

Memorial Day's games were very good, even though participation wasn't quite what I'd hoped. Of course, it's not about quantity, it's quality and by that measure, Memorial Day was a real win.

I think I might have gained a rank in painting skills over the last 12 months. Small changes in technique, products and habits have combined to simply make me a better painter. I'm a big believer that bases make the model and I strive to keep the bases pretty; they are the frame and an ugly base  is such a distraction.

I think the biggest change for me this year is the addition of paper models for terrain. I did a few for the Italian Wars and added a few recently for WWII. They're fun, inexpensive and look very nice. I'm happy to have added them to the arsenal.

What do I hope to accomplish in 2022, gaming-wise? Well, let's see.

-   More early-1700's North Americans for Blood and Plunder. The last batch I painted up from Sash and Saber were a joy to paint up and they need an enemy.

-   More Naps. The forces I have now scratch the itch but an extra unit or two to the mix would be nice.

-  More Italian Wars units. Same reasons as the Naps above.

-   I forked over a little cash for a couple of Infinity droids recently and just painted them up. Pics later. A 75% discount is hard to pass up. They're for an army I wasn't collecting, but it appears that I am now. I'll do my best to keep additions to sale-only items and not to spend much money on what's clearly a flight of fancy. Those blasted Infinity models are so great to paint.

-   I want to get in some Modern Spearhead. I haven't played in a while and it's such an excellent game system. While its competitors are OK, it's a bit like comparing O'Douls and Guinness.

-   Play a game or two of Force on Force. This might be with the WWII Partisans vs Germans or 15mm Moderns, but either way, the game needs to get some play.

-   I may look at moving the Batman Minis. It was fun, but I might be done with it. If nothing else, I'll move the minis into long-term storage and out of my primary storage tier. I did the same with some of my beloved Firestorm Armada ships recently. Probably should look at moving some of the Dystopian Wars stuff too.

-   Find or develop a "holy grail" skirmish game suitable for moderns or sci-fi. I've had significant trouble finding a system I like with the right blend of simplicity and granularity. Blood and Plunder's mechanics are really close to what I'm looking for. Perhaps I shall poach some ideas of theirs and expand them to fit what I'm after.

The Weird Post

Well, this is weird as hell and I'm having trouble processing right now. I've had a good week off and this weekend has been fine. Until a couple hours ago. My good gaming buddy Mike and his wife were in a nasty car crash in Jacksonville last night and his wife Trish died. Mike's in the ICU at a hospital in Jacksonville. I'm not sure what happened - details are scant, though apparently Trish was ejected from the car. We're not sure if Mike's awake and aware of what happened.

What a damn tragedy. Mike and Trish were a great couple and the rare pair of two gamers. My heart breaks for Mike who has lost his wife and his best gaming buddy all at once. I can't imagine and don't want to. I hadn't seen them in ages (thanks pandemic) and was glad to visit with them a couple weeks ago. Trish was the lead of the board gaming group in Waycross so that gaming community will be devastated by this loss as well.

RIP Trish. Mike, I'm truly sorry for your loss.

Updated "Blogger" Controls

I'm curious... for those of you out there who use Google's Blogger platform for hosting your own blogs, what are your thoughts about the new interface and controls? There are enough small changes to just really irritate me. I won't be changing to a different platform; that would be too severe of a shift. Having been in the IT industry since 1991, I've seen many cases of "change for change's sake," and I'm having a hard time picking up in the value created by these changes.

If I didn't mention it in an earlier post, my usual gaming buddy Ziggy is currently deployed in the Middle East. He's a loadmaster on a C-130. Expected home in mid-October. Here's to him and all of you service-members out there. Stay safe! No more nasty ISIS jackasses shooting at your plane!

2020 Gaming Goals (and 2019 reflection)

Haha. Like there is such a thing. Here, let me announce my plans for how I'm going to goof off next year.

Honestly though, there are a few things I'd like to make happen sooner rather than later, hobby-wise.

1) Play a game with those 20mm Napoleonics I've been working on and collecting. I've got enough done for a very small into game which would scratch the itch. I've got enough infantry in the wings to make it a much more interesting affair. Goal - First Quarter.

2) At least four more games of Batman miniatures. Once per quarter is doable, right? The games have been darn entertaining and the narrative campaign has been fun to keep alive.

3) Play Sabre Squadron at least once, either 6mm or 15mm. It's a good candidate for Memorial Day.

4) Play Modern Spearhead at least twice. I don't think it made it on the table at all in 2019. Truly sad.

5) Get in a game or two of Dystopian Wars. Zig, David and I discussed it but have yet to make it a reality.

So, where did it all go off the tracks in 2019? Well, Ziggy and I spent a good bit of time focusing on Infinity and X-Wing. I don't regret it at all. Infinity has been a great learning experience and now that we're more familiar with the nuances, it's a really good tactical skirmish. X-Wing is just fun, plain and simple.

Another tabletop distraction has been Dungeons and Dragons. Again, no regrets at all and I think (hope) we've got another session lined up for Saturday. If that falls through, maybe the minis will hit the table?

My best accomplishment for 2019 has been the Skirmish rules I developed for my X-Files game. They're simple and supremely functional! It's about as close to a Holy Grail system as I've cobbled together in ages. Everyone has their own ideas about "perfect" game systems and I think I checked all the boxes with SKIrmish:

1) No repetitive dice rolls - none of that GW-style HIT, WOUND, SAVE bullshit. One die = one result.

2) No nitpicking - do 45 degree arcs and fractional inches make games fun? F*** no! They make them nitpicky and give certain types something to wallow in. Nothing wrong with a range ruler, man.

3) Not in the rules, make it up - Oh what, you want to hotwire that car or create a distraction? Discuss with your level-headed opponent and make it so.

Another high-point was the Rate of Fire games played with Ziggy and then re-run at Tanksgiving. It's awesome to see a scenario play out excellently twice in a row. Both games we nail-biters and a complete blast.

Alright y'all, I'm out for now. Have a safe New Year's Eve and a wonderful 2020!

An Update Since It's Been a While

Hi all. Not a whole lot to report on from Ski-land. My only recent gaming of note has been a couple sessions of D&D with the family. My brother-in-law thought we owed it to our kids to introduce them to traditional role-playing and we did. Unsurprisingly, the kids washed out early, but the grown-ups had a terrific time. It's been 3 or 4 weeks since the last session but we'll probably pick it up again next weekend. When we left off, the party had just walked into a cult ceremony of some description. Good thing we were all wearing cult robes and are disguised enough to get by!

I did finish another batch of 24 20mm Prussians for my Napoleonic project. I know, I know... pics or it didn't happen. I've got a drawer with about 100 unbased Naps in it. They'll soon start getting based . It was an effort to keep the basing consistent across all the elements. I've also got a dozen French chevaux in the queue with their riders close behind.

See, not just fake news!

Ziggy and I are actually going to play a real, proper 6 x 4, d-handful wargame this afternoon. It's been a while for both of us - about 2 months! We're going to play Rate of Fire WW2 using my 20mm / 1/72nd minis. A bit of the old Eastern Front. Technically speaking, it's a scenario playtest for the game I'm taking to Mike's in a few weeks for Tanksgiving. Either way, it's toy soldiers shooting each other and I'm very excited.

Infinity: The Review

I figured I'd start a new type of post on my blog in which I review games I play / have played for anyone interested in giving it a try.

First up, Infinity by Corvus Belli.

Description
Infinity is a very high-tech sci-fi skirmish game set in Corvus Belli's proprietary IP universe. A typical "full size" game will have 10-15 miniatures per side on a 4 foot by 4 foot play area. Games are not quick - three turns will fill up two hours easily. Minis are 30mm-ish scale and based on GW-style 25mm bases.

Cost
Rules are free via the website as is their Army Builder app. Miniatures are moderately priced - retailing for around $9-$11 each. Finding them on sale is usually pretty easy on many web stores. The cost of a "full sized army" is going to be around $100. You'll want to buy some acrylic flame templates too for $12-15.

Pros
- Inexpensive.
- Phenomenal miniatures. If you're a painter, you'll be very happy.
- Rewarding game play that's much more than just an I-go-u-go dice rolling contest.

Cons
- Weird dice mechanics that take a bit of getting used to.
- Ability for very powerful models to dominate a game.
- Tons and tons of "special equipment" for models which require game time to research if you're not completely familiar with their effects.
- Lots of markers.

My Opinion
I'm happy I picked it back up. When we first tried it back around 2013 it wasn't what I was expecting and it did not appeal to me. Years later once I wrapped my head around what they were trying to sell me, it became a lot interesting. "So, what are they selling," you ask? It's a fine-grained infantry skirmish. Each model has a lot of details and needs to be managed as such. You do not control a mob of 15 identical dwarf warriors, you control a group of uniquely-capable fighters that need to be managed appropriately. Certainly you're going to have some "grunts" and some "superstars" but you still need to figure out how to best manage your resources.

Each turn is made of of many actions per player - essentially each side gets as many actions as it has troops on the table. Multiple actions can be used on a single model during a turn - it's not really a "one per figure" situation, so a hero-type character could be doing a good bit of running around and shooting while his teammates watch on in awe. A typical game is going to also involve a lot of counters and markers on the tabletop - be prepared to delve into your collection for suitable tokens.

Specific roles are well-represented such as snipers, close combat-specialists, medics, and hackers. Walking out in the open in front of a sniper is stupid, as it should be. Close combat specialists will dominate less-capable foes and medics offer an easy way to keep casualties in check.

Oh yes, hackers. Instead of magic and spells, some models are "hackers" and can use cyber-attacks to affect enemy and friendly models. It isn't overly powerful but adds a boatload of flavor and charm.

Parts of Infinity feel clumsy at first but get better the more you play. Having a computer handy is extremely useful so you can look up rules on the Infinity Wiki as you go. I wouldn't consider playing without a handy internet device.

Infinity's complexity might make it a poor fit for novice gamers but otherwise I give it a strong endorsement.

One other consideration and don't take it lightly - TERRAIN TERRAIN TERRAIN. The more the better. If you don't already have a solid collection of 28-32mm scenery you'll need it.

2019 Gaming

Here's hoping that y'all have had a nice Christmas. Mine was pretty chilled and the downtime was quite welcome. Work has been a real summnabitch lately and it's taken a toll on me. The current project is very close to completion so maybe things will lighten up soon.

I'm not going to try to predict what I might be doing game-wise for the next twelve months, but there are a few things I'd like to scratch off the list!

 1. I'm going to keep working on 20mm Napoleonics. I've posted next to nothing about them on the blog mostly because the project stalled for a while. I did however finish off some Prussian cavalry and cannons recently and just received Prussian foot-sloggers in the mail yesterday. Maybe I'll have enough done to play a small game next year?

2. Play more Batman. I've collected a bunch and put together some good scenery pieces. It's a good game just screaming for scenario play, and I've got ideas for sure.

3. Get in some Blood and Plunder games. Now that I've got two armies, may as well get some use out of them. Like Batman, the game is oozing with character, just waiting to exploited.

4. Play a game of Malifaux. Hahahaha! I've got loads of painted gorgeous minis and still haven't given it a go. We'll see.

5. Play an X-Wing 2.0 tournament. I was gifted the XW2 starter for Christmas; I'd very purposefully been holding out, but I resolve to stop being a stubborn old fart and get with the program now. I need to throw down some cash on conversion kits so I can use my pile of 1.0 ships.

Ziggy and I have really gotten a kick out of Infinity recently so I imagine we'll continue with that in the months ahead. I'm looking forward to Rapier game con in Jacksonville in February. I'm very sad that there will be no Gnomecon in 2019. Excited about the Memorial Game Day Bash and the next Tanksgiving.

Be well and good gaming!

TEXT ONLY!

Hi all. It's been a distracty time recently for me but I have made time for game-related things. Last weekend, I went down to Jacksonville Florida to RapierCon with David and Mark and we met with Mike and others. It was a long, fun day of gaming. I've got pics of the games I played and will post a trip report soon.

I also put some effort into getting a new game together. More details on that later. Because I'm having game components made, I want to take some precautions. It's a board game that David and I kicked around ideas on last year at Gnomecon and this year it'll make its debut.

Speaking of Gnomecon, I'll be running the Second Annual Rubber and Lead Tournament this year on Saturday afternoon. Trophies, prizes, ribbons, etc. have arrived or are in the mail. I'm pretty excited. There have been a few tweaks to the game since last year's tournament that I think make for a better game. Now if I could just find an cost-effective way to publish it!

Something For The Weekend

So, the Space Cadets are getting together in Statesboro this Saturday for an X-Wing tournament. It's not our usual bag, but what the heck, right? I'm still on the fence with which force I'm going to use.The two in contention are a First Order TIE group with five ships and a Scum and Villainy list featuring what I like to refer to as "trash mobs."

The TIE list:

FO-ties
100 points

PILOTS
Omega Specialist (25) Special Forces TIE (25), Special Ops Training (0)
Valen Rudor (28) TIE Advanced Prototype (22), Expert Handling (2), XX-23 S-thread Tracers (1), TIE/v1 (1), Autothrusters (2)
Epsilon Squadron Pilot (15) x 2
“Epsilon Ace” (17)

The obvious benefits are having five ships, loads of maneuverability, and generally being a pain in the ass. Valen is a beast, as is the Special Forces TIE, which can fire backwards. IMHO, I regard this as a legitimately good list. Maybe not completely cheesed out like a 2-Defender list, but solid.

and the S&V list:

4 X 6
100 points

PILOTS
4-LOM (29) G-1A Starfighter (27), Lightning Reflexes (1), Collision Detector (0), Mist Hunter (0), Tractor beam (1)
Palob Godalhi (28) HWK-290 (20), Adaptability (0), Ion Cannon Turret (5), Moldy Crow (3)
Kad Solus (28) Protectorate Starfighter (25), Concord Dawn Protector (1), Autothrusters (2)
Kaa’to Leeachos (15) Z-95 Headhunter (15), Adaptability (0)

This group on the other hand is a lot more suspect. It's a blast to play with, but two ships with 1 Agility and being pretty reliant on sneakery, it's very risky. I did beat David's Decimator with it, but I have a hard time believing I could win more than one game with them. This lists best schtick is that all ships are pilot skill six, allowing me to move and fire with them in any order I choose - a very nice feature.

So the question I'm left with is, do I play for fun (the scum list) or try to be genuinely competitive (the Imperials)? It is a tournament and I hate to be a patsy for someone to just roll over. Hmmmm. Decisions decisions. I guess I have until 10am Saturday to make up my mind.

Update

Posts have been rather scarce here lately. The last few weeks have been pretty intense at work and I've got three more weeks of four-alarm craziness ahead.Apart from getting a promotion to department manager, I inherited all of the office-move coordination responsibilities the previous IT Manager volunteered for. Next weekend is go-time for move #1. The following two weekends will be other (different) office moves.

I have gotten in gaming in the meantime, and painting too! We played out monthly SFB game last week Sunday (the tenth) and I got in a game of Dystopian Wars with Zig Saturday evening that was an instant classic 6-turn, 4+ hour epic. I'll post AARs eventually.

I slapped that Gnomecon banner up there last week, but it seems that the Gnomecon leadership and coordination is in disarray. I signed up to host StarDust Ground, but haven't yet heard anything back. Not sure what's going to happen with Gnomecon... I'm disappointed. Well, if nothing else, me and the fam will head down and goof on board games for a couple days.

Be well!

2015 - The Gaming Year That Was

Another year in the books. 2015 has some great gaming memories for me and will be tough to top next year. I've tried out a few new games this year and done a TON of painting. I even managed some scenery construction. So, let me see what I've done hobby-wise:

Table-Top Games Played
1. Anima Tactics
2. X-Wing
3. StarDust
4. StarDust: Ground
5. Dystopian Wars
6. Star Fleet Battles
7. HOTT
8. Megablitz
9. AK47 Republic
10. GHQ Micro Armor Modern and WW2
11. Check Your 6! Jet Age
12. Blue Sky Red Sun
13. Starfire
14. Strike Legion: Planetary Ops
15. Maurice
16. Firestorm Armada
17. Shipwreck
18. Flames of War Vietnam and WW2
19. Relic Knights
20. StarDust: Magic
21. Sabre Squadron
22. All Quiet on the Martian Front
23. Rate of Fire
24. Untitled 6mm Sci Fi Homebrew
25. Frostgrave
26. Harpoon

Not shabby! That's 26 rule sets over 52 weeks. I'm sad and surprised that Modern Spearhead didn't make the list. I'll have to rectify that next year. I can't think of any other games that I wish I had played but didn't.

It's tough to pick "fondest" memories of the gaming year, but a handful stick out...

     - Gnomecon 4. My wife and kids joined me this year and we all had a fantastic time. My game StarDust: Ground was well-liked which was a big thrill for me.

     - Tanksgiving at Mike's place in November. It was simply a great time. Who knew that Flames of War was an enjoyable game when it was played 4 v 4?

     - The monthly trips to Brunswick for SFB. It's sooo damn fun.

I managed to recycle a lot of minis this year; I repainted my Dystopian Wars Blazing Suns fleet and pulled out some old GW and other fantasy orks this weekend to overhaul for Frostgrave. That said, I had a LOT of additions to the collection too! I'm feeling good about keeping the lead molehill small. No mountains here! I also have not paid full retail or anything close to it for any of my DW or FSA purchases this year. Heck, the DW French have either been gifts or 40% off or more every time I've added something.

While my StarDust games are still works in progress, they are very solid and will get some play in the months ahead. SD:G will certainly make an appearance at Gnomecon 5. The Robot Army will get some play and I'll get some artillery called in!

So what do I want to change in 2016?

The Definitive List of What I Should Do 2016
Play Maurice
Play Modern Spearhead
Play Sabre Squadron
Make More Terrain
Playtest More SD and SDG and FINALIZE THE DAMN RULEBOOKS

Where I Should Cut Back
1/3000, 3mm, 6mm, 15mm, 20mm and 28mm Purchases (I think that's all of 'em)
FSA / DW Purchases
Impluse minis just because I want to paint them  or they are on sale (a major issue)

2015 has been great year for me and my family - I hope next year is equally great. I hope the new year is wonderful to you all as well.

20 May 2015

Mid Week-ery

I've been working on Canadian Shermans and evil SS Panzer IVs this week. The lot of them are close to completion. They'll get a bit of drybrushing and perhaps some mud or other weathering then be ready for basing. I want to label the rear edge of the base with a unit identifier, but can't decide how to produce the labels. Painting it on will be too sloppy. I've seen some well done unit labels on Spearhead minis. I'll try to emulate that technique one way or another.

I've got my Check Your 6 Jet Age scenarios all prepped for the Memorial Day Bash on Sunday at Morningstar. Two Vietnam games, Gulf of Sidra (1981) and a Gulf War match up from 1991 with F-15s and MiG-25s.

Back to work... have a good rest of the week!

25 March 2015

Update

Not much gaming going on lately. My weekends have been busy with other things. This weekend I'll be camping with the Cub Scouts. My wife and I may play a game Friday evening - it'll probably be AK47 Republic or Dystopian Wars. AK47 should be an easy sell - she kicked my ass last time. President Johnson has waited long enough for revenge on the MCC. Plus, the new tanks need a christening. I got an OH-6 Little Bird in the mail yesterday - I may also be able to get it ready too. I put it together last evening and have gotten it 80% painted.

My buddy David is now teasing WWII Micro Armor. Actually I think he wants to use Pico Armor. I'll have to see how far he gets but it's exactly what I don't need, another genre. Granted, I've been wanting to do a WWII army in 3 or 6mm. I'd rather do 6mm, since then they can do double duty with James' Mega Blitz. I've never done a British army in ANYTHING so perhaps this will be a first for me.

You be well and I'll be sure to post a bat rep for whatever we play Friday.

05 March 2015

Gnomecon -1

Tomorrow I'm heading downtown for Gnomecon! I've been busy this week making handouts, game material and fliers for StarDust Ground. I think I have most of my ducks in a row. I've taken the day off tomorrow so I can organize my two tubs of stuff - one for SDG Friday and one for Dystopian Wars Saturday.

I've signed back up on Twitter, primarily to publicize updates to StarDust and StarDust Ground - the Twitter handle being @thestardustgame. I also have an email address for SD related questions - stardustgame@outlook.com.

I'm excited and really looking forward to GC this year, I'll do my best to fire off pics and updates during the con. Have a good weekend!

StarDust Ground - Introduction

As you probably know, I've been working on a new set of game rules recently. They date back to last summer and are a result of my aggravations with other game systems. StarDust Ground is intended as a 15mm Company-level miniatures wargame. Company-level is probably a bit too large - more like a couple of platoons along with some tanks, etc.

My goal was to create a wargame that meets the rather strict criteria I look for in a game:
1) No fiddly mechanics. Ideally short die-roll sequences should determine outcomes.
2) Quick play. This kind of goes back to "no fiddly mechanics." Movement rules, combat rules, morale rules should all be easy enough to remember without having to refer back to a rulebook.
3) Fun.

So what did I arrive at? I took the best bits of all the other games I've played and re-assembled it as StarDust Ground. Chain of Command, Flames of War, Dystopian Wars, Battletech, Warhammer 40K, Space Marine, WarZone, Modern Spearhead and others have all contributed to SDG. Long-time readers will remember my starship combat game StarDust that I rolled out early last year. SDG follows a similar design ethic and has resulted in an equally good game.

Details, you want details... well, I've decided to use Flames of War-sizes bases for the models. They are nearly perfect for 15mm gaming and look nice. Squads are typically composed of two medium stands and often will have a small stand attached with a special weapon - maybe a missile launcher or automatic weapon. Other special units will also be on small stands such as leaders, medics and snipers. 10-12 medium stands and 4-6 small stands of infantry is enough for a good game. That'll give you 5 or 6 squads. Add a few vehicles for variety. Generally speaking artillery is off-board so you can always add a bit of starch to an army that way without spending any scratch.

Squads activate individually and each side alternates activations. As squads take fire or hits in close combat, they lose effectiveness and will need to seek cover and rally to regain their usefulness. Some types of troops like the space bugs featured in recent battle reports ignore hits they've received until it has reached a critical point - they are "mindless creatures" after all.

One of the toughest part of coming up with a game like this is producing stats for troops and vehicles - especially when you're limited by your selection of toys. I've certainly had fun buying more miniatures in the interest of making a more complete game! Most of the obvious tropes have been covered - grunts, elites, space bugs, robots, close-combat focused troops, ranged-combat focused troops. I've worked out vehicle rules for all sorts of vehicles - jeeps, tanks, VTOLs.

Something I've been sure to account for is weather conditions. We tend to only ever play games during clear daytime conditions and that won't be the case with SDG. If you've ever played Blood Bowl you'll be familiar with checking the weather before the match. Ditto for SDG - it could be a snowy blizzard or a sand storm. Either way, if is isn't clear daytime conditions, foul weather or simple darkness is going to change things considerably.

So, what have I got left? I still have one army that has not gotten any table time yet and it needs a shakedown. I'd like to put some scenarios / mission together to include with the rules. Beyond that, I can't think of anything lacking at the moment.

SDG will be ready for its first public outing at Gnomecon!. I'll be running demos from 5-9pm Friday evening, March 6th. Hopefully I'll have the rulebook presentable by then - I've had so much other crap going on recently that perfecting that book seems more and more insurmountable every time I think about it. I'm at 18 pages right now and that doesn't include the QRS, unit stats or counters and I haven't done any example diagrams. Putting the final product together into a single PDF that you aren't ashamed of is a lot more challenging than you'd think.

Be well!

The End (of 2014)

This has been a good gaming year for me. I covered lots of ground, didn't waste much money, and had a lot of fun in the process. Early in the year, James and I got together for a rather entertaining game of Megablitz which is quite different from the usual games I play. He's been working on some Eastern Front units, so Megablitz may indeed get revisited soon.

I also put my space combat game StarDust through its paces and published it. I haven't put it on the table top recently but I have continued to work on it further, creating new ships, weapons and special equipment. I need to roll the updates into the main book and re-publish as 1.1. The rules are solid and it provides for a very good game.

In April, my son and I attended Gnomecon here in Savannah. We did very well in the X-Wing tournament and later that evening I played in a big nine-player Star Fleet Battles game. That game was one of the most enjoyable I've ever taken part in. I don't know if that magic can be re-created this year, but I'm sure SFB will be on the to-do list at Gnomecon 2015.

I played a great game of AK47 Republic in July, with my wife who normally does not play my games. We both had a good time and probably are due for another shoot-em-up. We played Dystopian Wars not long afterwards and she liked that too.

August was game-heavy. We played a lot of World War One games in honor of the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the war. There was a good deal of Games Workshop Great War and we also played Victory at Sea: Age of Dreadnoughts and some Wings of Glory. Some unusual games and some good times to be sure!

Also in August I put my sci-fi rules 1.0 to the tabletop test. The game worked very well but involved too many types of dice. Although part of me really enjoys d4s - d20s they don't really belong in a quick-moving wargame so I did a massive re-write and settled on d8s for all dice rolls, just like StarDust, in fact I have named it StarDust: Ground. Over Thanksgiving and the few days I was out with vertigo in early December I did a great deal of typing and have many pages of rules done. The system needs more play-testing but it is easily as good as anything you'd pay money for right now.

Throughout the second half of the year we played Star Fleet Battles regularly, at least once a month. We began with the Cadet's Rules but are now using the "Real" rules. For a game I've have for 20+ years and played only sporadically, it has been beyond awesome to get into SFB regularly. It's a complex game but very rich in all aspects - background, tactics, depth. There was some mention on another blog recently about "dessert" games and "meal" games. SFB is a meal game, much like Modern Spearhead. Neither game is "light" by any stretch of the imagination and thus are rather rewarding games to play. Dystopian Wars to me is a fine example of a "dessert" game - it is fun to play, but is more of a dice-rolling contest whose "tactics" rely more upon army-list selection than actual in-game decisions.

James and I got together for some HOTT in October - he'd been putting a dinosaur army together for a while and it gave me a chance to field my Romans for their inaugural battle. We had a good time with it and probably are due for another afternoon of HOTT. James, I know you read this blog - let's make it happen!

I've played a good deal of Dystopian Wars lately, mostly because Ziggy and I have had new toys to test out. We've gotten comfortable with the 2.0 rules which do work a lot better than the previous edition. I think we need to take a break from DW and put some other stuff back on the table - it's been a while since our last MSH outing and CY6:JA needs some love.

So, 2015, what would I like to do in the year ahead? Star Fleet Battles must stay in the rotation. I like having a dedicated SFB day once per month. We must get in at least a couple games of MSH. I need to work on a follow-up scenario to our last battle (The Bay). I want to play test SD:G and complete the writing process. I'm not sure if I want to GM anything at Gnomecon, but I'll do whatever needs to be done to get SFB on the menu. I may try dragging StarDust out again - I got hosed by work in 2014 and wasn't able to demo it. I'll do my best to avoid that this time around!

As far as new games go, the only thing that's eye-catching at the moment is Relic Knights, mostly because of the good looking minis. Saga is tempting but seems to be rather pricey, especially with the special dice, etc. One other potential project is micro- or pico-armor scaled WWII using GHQ's MicroArmor rules, but I've already talked myself out of that about six times in the last year and a half.

If I don't post again this year, have a nice NYE celebration - drink lots, be merry and be safe!

A Quick Update

I haven't been up to much gaming activity this week. I keep staring at the painting table but haven't done any painting. It has just been a busy week for other things and painting got pushed down the list a bit. Maybe Saturday morning I'll get some stuff knocked out; the last thing I was working on was French tiny fliers for Dystopian Wars.

I ordered some tanks (PT-76es) and more African irregulars for AK47 Republic. It is always fun stuff to paint and I haven't done any in a while. I also finally managed to get a French Carrier for DW shipped to me after a great deal of screwing around. The place I ordered it from initially, ciphergames.com, was out of stock but took weeks to respond to email inquiries and they have no phone number on record. I spent quite a bit of time trying to get in touch with them to no avail. When they finally did respond with the ol' "that's out of stock and blah blah blah" response I asked that they please cancel the order. Two weeks later, they responded with an "OK, it is canceled." I then placed an order for the same on frpgames.com whose website indicated they only had one in stock. A few days later I got the dreaded "it is back-ordered" email. Since the single-ship blister is out-of-production I figured that was the end of that. A few hours later they emailed back indicating that they'd located it in their other warehouse. Hurrah!

I've got SFB on Sunday this weekend and probably nothing else on Saturday because of other activities interfering. I'm excited about SFB for sure.

Arrrrgh!

I woke up Sunday with a sudden bout of vertigo. I've never had it before and hope I never have to suffer through it again. Any head movement causes me to feel as though I am falling. It sucks. I wasn't able to play in the big DW game and have basically been confined to the couch for two days. I'm staying home from work again today - I'd be useless there. Yesterday was a solid improvement over Sunday, but this morning seems a small step back.

On the plus side, I was able to get a lot of typing done yesterday for my sci-fi 15mm game, so a complete rule book isn't far away! My son who stayed home from school sick and I watched about 15 episodes of Clone Wars yesterday. It was awesome.

I downloaded the Firestorm Armada rule book yesterday. Looks pretty good. I'll probably pick up a starter fleet box some time after Christmas. It's no StarDust, but it'll do.

Your Link of The Day

Here's something a bit different from the norm - for my site anyway. I read this article a few weeks ago, and although it is written specifically about Advanced Squad Leader, it applies to any sort of wargame. I rather liked it.

I'm off this week - I've gotten into the routine of taking all of Thanksgiving week off. I don't know if I'll get any gaming in, but I've got some painting that needs tending to. Be well!
