Wargamer's Q & A

Found this on the Angry Lurker's blog (see the link off to the right) and decided to have a go at it myself.
1.        Favourite Wargaming period and why?
High Fantasy I think. Interesting since I don't currently play anything of that description but I do like it a lot!

2.       Next period, money no object?
With all due regard to the previous question, 20th Century Arab-Israeli conflicts.

3.       Favourite 5 films?
          The Princess Bride
Star Trek II, The Wrath of Khan
          Big Trouble in Little China
          Joe Versus The Volcano
          there is currently no #5

4.       Favourite 5 TV series?
          Arrested Development
The Office (UK and US, both are equally great)
          Frasier
          Star Trek: TNG
          It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

5.       Favourite book and author?
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams

6.       Greatest General? Can’t count yourself!
         Erwin Rommel

7.       Favourite Wargames rules?
Damn that a tough one. WHFB 5th edition probably.

8.       Favourite Sport and team?
          I love watching NFL football
No favorite team - it just leads to heartbreak

9.       If you had a only use once time machine, when and where would you go?
I'd love to see pre-Columbian Tenochtitlan. Wouldn't want to stay there necessarily. Seems like one of those utterly fantastic and unbelievable things.

10.   Last meal on Death Row?
Big filet mignon, rare. Loaded baked potato. Glenlivet 15yo scotch.

11.    Fantasy relationship and why?
I'm already in it. My wife is my bestest friend ever.

12.   If your life were a movie, who would play you?
          Jason Bateman.

13.   Favourite Comic Superhero?
Superman. He's everything a superhero should be. He's super. He's noble. He's the ultimate good guy.

14.   Favourite Military quote?
"Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!"  Admiral Farragut

15.   Historical destination to visit?
Since I have to just answer one, I'll say the Colosseum in Rome.

16.   Biggest Wargaming regret?
Buying so damn many books for certain games. GW and Battlefront, I'm looking at you.

17.   Favourite Fantasy job?
         Scotch taste-tester

18.   Favourite Song, Top 5?
Fool In The Rain, Led Zeppelin (entire Zeppelin catalog should be listed here)
You Don't Know Me, Drivin' N Cryin'
         Comfortably Numb, Pink Floyd
         More Than A Feeling, Boston
O Holy Night, (Various, but when a top-notch singer does it, the song is incomparable)

19.   Favourite Wargaming Moment?
Beating the undefeated Skaven army in a WHFB campaign many years ago. I marshaled my Lizardmen to a perfect storm of flanking, perfect timing, powerful magic and good fortune to utterly rout the filthy rats. Anyone who has played wargames knows that nothing ever goes to plan. Well that was my single game moment of everything going not just according to plan, but above and beyond.

20.   The miserable Git question, what upsets you?
Whiners and crybabies. The stupid. High power bills.

To the Shores of Tripoli...

My first foray into teeny tiny ships was enjoyable. I finished up my four Nanuchkas and three US Navy ships over the weekend, along with 2 SH-60s and 2 Su-22s.

The missed blue on the front of that Nanuchka's base got touched up later...

8 megapixel cameras really have a way of highlighting the shortcomings of a paintjob. Oh well, they look very nice in person with the ol' Eyeball Mk.1. The ships' bases were cut from 30mil plastic - actually throw-away botched ID cards from work. God bless crappy card printers that ruin many, many cards! I've got enough cards for the whole 6th Fleet! The aircraft bases are, from the bottom working up, pennies, balsa, nails.

I got cracking on the MiG-21s last night, just the top and underside base colors. Probably knock out their camo patterns this evening.

I have put ideas to paper for the Libyan / USN campaign so hopefully I'll be able to actually get gaming in soon!

In other news, a co-worker just handed me a DVD of Windows 8 Pro RTM, so I'll be thoroughly modernized on the home computer tonight.

Saturday Gaming

Junior and I got in two games of my new home-brewed skirmish wargame on Saturday. I put the rules together because I'm just not really altogether happy with the other small-scale rules I've looked at lately. Once I've playtested enough and edit the written rules to my satisfaction, I'll probably post them for anyone to use.

Game 1 featured my US Army National Guardsmen and the Giant Radioactive Bugs from the Swamp. Junior took control of the Giant Ladybugs. His goal was to devour sheep at the farm nearby. The National Guard was to protect the herd and kill bugs.

Our initial setups. The bugs had to start in the pond. The Army had to set up within 12" of their table edge.

The bugs make their way through the woods for cover. The heavily armed jeep covers the road.

The bugs shoot the gap. The Queen and one Drone have taken a point of damage. The bug in the middle of the road is running interference - targeting priority means the Recoilless Rifle is going to have a hard time hitting the swarm further away stampeding through the fence.

INCOMING! The Army is about to get up close and personal with the monsters.

A giant bug attacks the jeep. It managed to destroy the gun, rendering the jeep pretty useless.

The generals.

The bazooka man managed to blast the Queen to smithereens before running forward to help Sergeant Jones with the bug he's been dueling with for a few minutes now.

The Guardsmen surround the last bug and squash it!

By the rules of the scenario, we determined that even though the bugs were wiped out, they still had a minor victory for killing more than 4 sheep. Need to make the bugs slightly tougher.

Game 2 featured my hapless Fantasy Human Warband against the wily Undead horde. It was a more straight forward affair - a simple hack n' slash kill fest. We both got to test out spell casting, I had my Algor the Green Wizard and Junior's leader was Blackie the Black, Necromancer Supreme.

Our setups. Junior formed small groups of 2 or 3 models. I formed two large groups, one of 5 and the other of 6 models.

Two of his skellies flanking my left side.

Yeah, I got flanked. I was hoping the spearmen (just out of frame to the bottom) and archers would be able to deal with the two wretches.

The battle is met in the center!

Things didn't go so well on my left. His archers pegged one of my spearmen thanks to a fortunate target priority override. He moved his Necromancer and a bodyguard out to duel my Wizard. It put his Necromancer within range of nearly every casualty making his Resurrection spell extremely useful.

He managed to kill one of my very strong Swordsmen and resurrect him as a skeleton warrior.

Algor, in a desperate attempt to slow down the horde, casts Explosion, hitting everything within 6 inches of himself with a moderate attack. It of course fails to harm any of the Undead and kills everything left in my force, save the Wizard.

With that, I surrendered. One knuckleheaded wizard against the boneyard just isn't what the doctor ordered.

Both games were very entertaining. I am quite happy with the rules. I need to make significant changes to two of the spells Junior got with his Necromancer. They were next to useless and need to get powered up. Resurrect was brutal. That what playtesting is for though. Actually, he brought up many points in the second game that will help the game in general.

New Toys (updated)

Damn I love getting home from work and finding this:
on my desk.

Ships and aircraft ordered weeks apart all showing up at the same time. For the same game. Win!

MiG-21s, Su-17s and UH-60s. 1/600 scale from www.picoarmor.com

4 Nanuchkas, a Spruance, Kidd and Ticonderoga. 1/3000 scale from www.skytrex.com

I'll have a go at them soon enough. Got some more work cranked out on my skirmish rules today. It's really getting together. I may be able to playtest basic mechanics this evening - the kids are going over to a friend's house to watch a movie for a few hours. Woohoo!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
7:30pm
Well I did get in a playtest. My trusty human warriors battled against their perennial foe, the undead. The undead won convincingly. As it stands, I'm pretty happy with the rules. Shooting may need to be tweaked up a hair to make it a tiny bit more deadly, but I'm not going to change anything until I play a game with some firepower-heavy forces. Maybe the Soviet infantry versus some US National Guardsmen next - submachineguns and semi automatic rifles should change things up a bit.

So Far This Week

Painted up the rest of my HOTT Narnians. That's three Giant Eagles.

Also got in a game of Risk 2210 with Junior on Monday evening. Kind of ironic after my long-winded post that day which mentioned Risk. I won. Age and treachery will always triumph over youth and luck. He's only 9 and not nearly the evil bastard he needs to be to succeed at Risk.

Worked some more on the never-ending horde of Paratroopers just to try to get them out of the way. No pictures. I'll let you imagine that in the mind's eye theater. Spoiler: I did not finish them.

Began putting together my own skirmish-level rules. I'm just not 100% happy with what I've been using. They will probably be playable by the weekend if I stay focused on them. Hell, they're playable now. I just have a few things that really need to be "engraved in stone" before I really give it a playtest.

Until next time...

My Gaming Top Ten

I've been a pretty avid gamer since 5th grade when I met a guy named David Green who was a year older than me and we were both fascinated by Dungeons and Dragons, although we had no idea what it really was. We would see these awesome books, but since ten-year-olds have very thin wallets, we had a notoriously tough time getting in the game. We constructed a huge board game based on the monsters and drawings we saw in the books at Waldenbooks in the mall, then played it quite literally all night long, until Saturday morning. Months later, his older sister bought the D&D basic set and we started playing for real.
Every other gamer has had his or her moment like that - the *boom* moment when you are hooked for life. Over the years I've had so many great experiences and very memorable moments and I just want to write about them. In no particular order, other than the order I remembered them...

Blood Bowl at Comic Box - During the Summer of 1995, Rich Hyde at Comic Box was organizing a Blood Bowl league. I was sort of familiar with the game, being a reader of White Dwarf, so grudgingly signed up and bought a Chaos team which soon became the renowned Horus' Heresies. Until that point, I had always just gamed with friends, not strangers, so the league was a bit of a gaming jump for me. I won my first 9 games of a 12-game season, then lost to David Peabody and his damned Skaven. My last game that season was against Chris Ziegler's 1-10 Dark Elves. He ran roughshod over me and we've been best of friends ever since. The season was a tremendous success and continued to run for many years, one Spring league and one in the Fall. I won season five, in the Fall of 1997 with the same Horus' Heresies. That season I went 12-1, including the three-game playoffs. Caused 50 casualties and gave up no touchdowns in the playoffs. I played in one other championship game with a Chaos Dwarf team and lost to Chris Hodgkins many seasons later. Playing league Blood Bowl at Comic Box in Savannah is easily my fondest gaming memory. There was drunk bowl, outdoors bowl, wall-pounding, the peanut gallery, dice-throwing, BoJangles, Spackle & Skittles - I am PLEASED! and a whole host of other wacky fun in the "golden age of gaming."

WH40K - I was introduced to tabletop wargames in the Spring of 1990. I was in Comic Box and saw this book "Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader." I flipped through it and was immediately fascinated. It was just so freaking cool. I played a lot. A whole lot. I spent a lot of money. A whole lot. I saw the game progress though two rules updates before I gave it up in 2003 when my son was born. I loved second edition the best. Mission cards, wargear cards, card-driven psychic powers and over-powered everything made it a tremendously entertaining game. There are so many contenders and pretenders, but Games Workshop was the only company with enough resources to make a game so deep and varied. I played a lot of third edition but the "fun factor" was stripped away leaving a dice-rolling game with too many miniatures on the table. 40K, you were a great game!

D&D 3e - When 3e D&D was released in 2000, a group of us went in whole-hog and decided to get back to old-fashioned role-playing. I rolled up a human cleric of Pelor, Vince Clartho and Jamey Luikart ran us through a campaign of his invention. Vince made it to 9th level before life got in the way and we stopped playing. We played some amazingly entertaining games of D&D back then for a couple of years. The stories and doings would take quite some time to relate and I may detail them in the future. It was a complete blast and I thank Jamey for putting up with us.

Gamma World - My RPG Game Mastering pinnacle was achieved somewhere around 1992 or 1993. My fiends Winston and Tim and I began playing Gamma World. I had one of those brilliant creative flashes and pretty well winged the whole campaign for about 2 years. Other people played with us from time to time, their characters becoming supporting actors in one long quest - for Winston's character's memory and for Tim's origins. A. Hugh and Lynch made their was through a very entertaining story that was played out wherever we had a spot to crash and play. My favorite character from the campaign was Winston's brother Chris' character, Rufus Cooter McCoy. I can still see that crazy bastard with his cowboy hat...

WHFB 4th and 5th - After we put the wraps on Blood Bowl after our first season of that, many of us who had played decided to jump into WHFB. Since most of us had played with different race teams in Blood Bowl, we kept those affiliations in Warhammer. I put together a Chaos army. We played a bunch of Warhammer. I eventually put together a whole host of armies - Orks, High Elves, Wood Elves, Skaven and Lizardmen. The Wood Elves and Lizardmen were my favorites. My shortest game ever took about five minutes. I was using Lizardmen against Dwarves. My opponent got the first turn. A cannon shot my Slann Mage Priest, killing him and causing all but one of my remaining units to flee off the board. Comedy!

Necromunda at Flight of the Phoenix - At various points in Savannah's history, we have been blessed with two game stores. Comic Box was always the best, but Tim McGraw's Flight of the Phoenix was fun and close to the house. Plus it had a much bigger gaming area. When Necromunda came out, there was much interest from the nerd community. At some point, either Chris Beatty or Neil Brabham concocted a massive multi-player game which was semi-cooperative. The players' gangs (and it was about 10 gangs) started at one end of a heavily-terrained 8x4 table which had 20 "encounter" locations on it. When a ganger triggered an encounter, a group of Tyranid nasties would pop out and wreak havoc until it was smacked down by the gangers. Casualties were heavy. Gangs made alliances and worked in groups. It took some work to figure out the right way to trigger an encounter - should you send in a Juve or the baddest guy in your gang? We all had a great time with it - my gang of Eschers was wiped out by a Zoanthrope which was the last encounter. Someone else finished off the monster and only one gang had any survivors. I'm really going to have to re-do that scenario for some game system or another.

WarZone - When Mutant Chronicles WarZone came out it generated a good bit of buzz. Here was a worthy competitor to 40K that was deep, fun and just plain good. I put together a Dark Legion army. Ziggy collected some Imperials. There was one tremendous incident where his jet-pack trooper was shot down and crashed into my demon general, killing both. I picked up Chronopia too when it was released but sadly the company didn't stick around very long and soon WarZone and Chronopia were just fond memories.

MLB Showdown - In 1999 Rich started pushing this collectible card game on us - MLB Showdown. I didn't know jack diddly about baseball. Boy did I learn! We put together a small league and had a good time with it. Then we ran a much more ambitious league - 100+ game season, full roster draft, you name it. I finished in first place in the American League. Rich took the NL pennant. I swept him in the World Series. He was not happy. Rich always had a bit of a temper. Great guy, love him to death, but his emotions were always just a little too close to the surface. MLB Showdown introduced me to baseball and for that, I will always be grateful.

Rifts - For a little while, when Blood Bowl wrapped up for the day at Comic Box, some of the guys would come over to my apartment and we'd play games. Matt Saint ran a Rifts campaign over a few months. I rolled up a Crazy (name unknown), who travelled with a Glitterboy and some other power-suit wearing wannabe. Somehow we got captured by Spluggorth slavers and got to be contestants in a gladiatorial arena. My Crazy whipped the shit out of whomever he was fighting and managed to win his freedom. I think I had to purchase Josh and David's characters out of slavery to get them out of Spluggorth possession. Ah, good stuff.

Risk - I own a lot of copies of Risk. I played a lot of Risk over the years. It's a fun back-stabbing affair that brings friends to fisticuffs. I really need to break it out again one of these evenings. REMEMBER KAMCHATKA! I have never upset the game board, but Jamey Luikart got me the closest.

There are lots of other games that could have been on the list - Call of Cthulhu, Cults Across America, Magic, Flames of War... maybe when I expand the list I'll expand on them.

Dystopian Wars

Managed to get in a game of DW today with Dennis up at Morningstar. We played a 600-pointer using land and air forces which is unusual for us. I decided to use Junior's Prussians for a change just to see what they're like.
I took:
1 A9V big-ass tank
5 A6V medium tanks
1 Metzger robot
2 little zeppelins
10 fighters

Dennis (COA) took:
6 bombards
3 medium walkers
6 small tanks
9 dive bombers
1 spotter plane

Our forces deployed. We ruled that the woods were "dense" and the swampy area was "soft." The river simply halved movement across it.

I moved the big tank out first and took a pot-shot at a little tank, damaging it. This was to be the only damage I caused for a looooooong time.

His bombards unload on big'un. Another portent of things to come.

One of the zeps does a disappearing act. Now I really hate bombards. They did direct fire at the airships, FWIW.

It was at this time my lungs were aching for booze. And it started raining something fierce.

The bombards and small tanks completely trash the big tank. Yup, that's 7 damage on it. Three on the living small airship. I have only destroyed one small tank token of Dennis'.

The ol' game store was packed this afternoon. Behind us, 40K and Warmachine were going strong.

The Sturmpanzer A9-V goes bye-bye. Just out of frame, in front of the zeppelin in the woods, my fighters had utterly whiffed against a wing of COA dive bombers.

Not to be out-done, The Metzger heads into the woods for cover from damn near everything white and unpainted. He "crashes" on his terrain roll and you can see the results of my 8d6 damage roll. This was by far my "best" dice roll of the afternoon. I shit you not, I critted my own robot walking it into the woods. Still, I've only killed one small tank token.

The fucking robot gets his. He was sitting on 4 damage as it was.

The scene of my second kill of the afternoon.

So... what have I learned? I learned that those particular dice never get to play Dystopian Wars again. Judas Priest that was some epic terrible dice rolling. I had a good ol' time anyway. It was just one of those games - we've all had them. I think all I killed was one small tank token and one bombard. I may have killed a second small tank token. My ten fighters accounted for two dive bombers. Ah well, it sure beat working!

Until next time...

He's Got Missiles

Making more missile for Shipwreck. As I mentioned, I have some ships on order and have also got some planes and helicopters on the way too.

Painting

Having a major case of gamer ADD, I've been painting HOTT figures this week; the wolfhounds, fauns and a general have all been completed.

I know the long spear isn't exactly canon for Narnians, but you have to work with what you have and it turned out OK anyway. The giant eagles are being primed - I should have them knocked out this weekend. I need to order bases for these guys. I've been tempted to stick them on FOW medium bases but I think I'll just hold off for the right 40x30 ones.

HOTT

I've had the rules for HOTT for quite some time and have been wanting to give it a go. I finally began putting together a force and am looking at one for Junior as well.

I'm putting together some good Narnians:
3 Giant Eagles (fliers)
3 Wolfhounds (knights beasts or riders)
4 Fauns (spears or blades)
1 King Peter (Hero)

Junior currently has a fascination with Soviet tanks so using the Churchill and Stuart tanks he's painted recently (Lend-Lease Obviously!), here's what I've come up with:
1 Churchill (behemoth)
2 Stuarts (riders)
1 Yak-9 (airboat)
1 Spetznaz (magician)
3 Strelkovy (warbands)
1 Katyusha (artillery)

Both lists were designed from the ground up as inexpensive. I'm looking forward to this little experiment.

Tis The Season

The season of the witch, that is. I'm on another tangent right now and have dipped my toe back in the 1/72 pool. The models are from Re...
